It might have been a good night for the “Birdman” and “Whiplash” folks, but Sunday’s Oscar show was a disappointment for ABC — longtime presenters of the Academy Awards.
The Oscars, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, showed a double-digit drop in TV ratings from last year, when Ellen DeGeneres hosted for the second time.
The 12 percent drop in ratings meant that the 2015 Oscars were the third worst since 2005. Only the 2009 and 2008 shows had fewer viewers.
Sunday’s show did snare an audience that was 50 percent bigger than the one watching the Grammys two weeks earlier. Traditionally, the Academy Awards is still one of the most-watched entertainment shows on television. Final numbers will be released later on Monday.
