Green City Market opens for its 17th outdoor season on Saturday (May 2), which is reason enough to celebrate.

But this year’s opening has something a little extra going for it.

With the James Beard Awards in town this weekend, a number of visiting chefs will join Chicago’s own at the Green City Market, starting at about 9:30 and continuing until about 11. They’ll be hanging out with local Beard winners Carrie Nahabedian (Naha, Brindille), Bruce Sherman (North Pond) and Sarah Stegner (Prairie Grass Cafe). Who knows who you might run into there?

Also on opening day, chef Shelley Young of The Chopping Block will be doing the 10:30 cooking demo. Check out the season’s chef demo schedule here.

Three new farmers — 1871 Dairy, Froggy Meadow Farm and Moss Funnel Farms — are joining the market this season, raising the number to 57 who are providing organic and sustainably raised produce and products there. Take a look at the participating farmers and their wares here.

The market, which is in Lincoln Park between Stockton and the 1800 block of Clark, opens at 7 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. every Wednesday and Saturday.  It’s held outdoor through October and then moves indoor and is held Saturdays at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum during the colder months.
