JOB OPENING: Bookkeeper

The Chicago Sun-Times is looking for a bookkeeper with excellent attention to detail to join the accounting team and support our content agency with scheduling production jobs for internal and external clients. The bookkeeper will create financial transactions, including posting information to accounting journals to Oracle.


General Accounting Support

  • Tag and monitor fixed assets
  • Pay invoices in a timely manner
  • Pay any debt as it comes due for payment
  • Remit tax payments to the appropriate authorities
  • Ensure that receivables are collected promptly
  • Conduct a monthly reconciliation of bank accounts
  • Maintain petty cash fund
  • Issue financial statements
  • Assemble information for external auditors for the annual audit
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain the annual budget
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements
  • Provide administrative support to management as requested

Content Agency Support

  • Open/Close projects in netinsight (job costing software)\
  • Manage billing for video production jobs
  • Provide status reports of video production jobs

Desired Skills

  • Demonstrated budgeting, time management and organizational skills
  • Experience establishing systems for tracking spending and monitoring contracts
  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communications
  • Able to troubleshoot and research solutions to problems
  • Ability to manage projects in a fast-paced environment, helping staff set and reach goals
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office


  • Associate’s degree in accounting or business administration
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and generally accepted accounting principles
