JOB OPENING: Controller
The Chicago Sun-Times is a distinctly Chicago news organization, with a laser focus on impactful investigations, sports, politics, and reporting stories that matter to the working men and women of Chicago. We’re hiring a Controller to lead all accounting-related activities for the Sun-Times Media Group and its subsidiaries.
The Controller will contribute to the design and implementation of financial operating strategy that effectively supports the company’s goals. This will be achieved through daily interaction with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This is a hands-on position requiring strategic and tactical leadership across all facets of the company’s accounting and finance operations.
Accounting and Analysis – owns recording and reporting of the company’s financial activities including revenue, expense and capital transactions, monthly close activities and consolidation. Supports the COO and SLT by providing timely and accurate analysis and interpretation of financial results.
Planning – develops and maintains the budget and forecasting process in conjunction with the COO and SLT and in consideration of emerging products and markets. The Controller provides analysis and advises on business development opportunities and long term planning.
Financial Controls and Risk Management – ensures that an effective financial control environment is maintained. Assesses internal and external risk factors to safeguard the assets of the company and limit the company’s liability throughout its areas of operation. Ensure the integrity of the company’s financial systems by establishing and maintaining the control environment. Works with the COO and appropriate legal counsel on financial and corporate compliance and risk assessment matters.
Treasury – continuously monitors and optimized the billing and collection processes. Develops a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs of the company. The Controller manages banking relationships and identifies strategies to enhance the company’s cash position.
Compensation and Benefits – collaborates with the COO and Director of Human Resources in the design and planning of the company’s compensation and benefit plans. Provides financial strategies and support for current and future compensation plans as well as financial analysis of benefit plan cost.
Internal and External Reporting – coordinates the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses and information reports. Prepare Board and Investor presentations as required.
Tax Planning and Compliance – assesses, plans and executes the company’s tax strategies and compliance for all jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with employer related taxes and required filings.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA Required – MBA preferred
- At least 6 years of applicable business experience including 4 years in a financial leadership role
- Experience in print or electronic media and similar industries preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Finance Operations, Planning and Systems as well as GAAP
- “Hands On” ERP Systems Experience – Oracle/PeopleSoft experience preferred
- Excellent analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated leadership abilities including hiring, training and mentoring staff
- Significant experience working with external auditors, internal controls and compliance-related issues
