Isaac Bucio desfiló el viernes con una túnica manchada de “sangre” y una enorme cruz de madera en la espalda para el evento anual del Vía Crucis de la Iglesia Católica de San Procopio.
Sus compañeros lo azotaron ligeramente con una cuerda cubierta de sangre falsa mientras la procesión seguía en oración por la avenida Racine en Pilsen.
El Vía Crucis se canceló el año pasado debido a la pandemia del coronavirus.
El reverendo Adan Sandoval agradeció que la iglesia pudiera volver a celebrar la procesión del Viernes Santo aunque la multitud fuera la mitad de su habitual multitud de “miles”. Los que no pudieron estar ahí en directo pudieron ver el evento de forma virtual.
“A veces oímos tantas noticias negativas de que se están cerrando iglesias y que la gente ya no va a la iglesia”, dijo Sandoval. “Pero hay otro lado de la historia, que algunas personas tienen esta hambre de Dios y tenemos que celebrar eso”.

Este es el cuadragésimo cuarto año que la iglesia celebra la procesión, la más antigua del Medio Oeste, según Sandoval.
La procesión suele comenzar en San Procopio, en el 1641 al sur de la calle Allport, y termina en el parque Harrison, en el 1824 al sur de la calle Wood, donde se hace una representación de la crucifixión de Jesucristo.
Este año, se transmitió en vivo una representación de la Última Cena desde la Iglesia de la Providencia de Dios, situada en el 717 del oeste de la calle 18th, antes de que la marcha terminara en un campo de fútbol a las afueras de San Procopio, donde se habían colocado grandes cruces de madera. En el campo de fútbol, los actores representaron la crucifixión, culminando el Vía Crucis de este año.
