While many business owners and city workers labored to clean up the wreckage from Saturday’s historic riots, protests resumed Sunday across Chicago and the suburbs as thousands of demonstrators demanded justice for George Floyd, a black man who was killed at the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer last week.

Most protests remained relatively peaceful, including one that generated a crowd of thousands at Daley Plaza. Demonstrators there laid on the ground and chanted, “I can’t breathe!” — which is what Floyd said, several times, as former officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck as he laid face-down on the pavement.

Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter Friday.

But while peaceful protests took place around the city, looters on the South, Southwest and West Sides took advantage of the scattered police presence throughout the city, hitting stores and strip malls outside downtown, where Mayor Lori Lightfoot limited access under her new precautionary measures.

At nightfall, many protesters defied Lightfoot’s 9 p.m. curfew, which she implemented Saturday evening and will be enforced until further notice.
