RICHMOND, VA.–I’m at the Democratic Party of Virginia’s Jefferson Jackson dinner on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, where Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Sen.Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will be speaking tonight. Virginia votes on Tuesday, as does Maryland and Washington D.C.
While waiting for Clinton and Obama to get here, I visited with a friend who lives in Richmond who is at the JJ dinner. He’s someone who I knew since before I started kindergarten in Chicago, Fred Orelove. Fred and I went to Peterson Elementary School and Von Steuben High School.
We lived across the alley from each other when we were tots; my family was at 5300 N. Christiana and he was on Kimball Avenue.
Fred and I reconnected last year at a Von Steuben all-school reunion. He’s now the executive director of the Partnership for People with Disabilities on the campus here. Last week while in Los Angeles covering the California primary, I stayed with another buddy from Peterson and Von Steuben, Judy Lipkin.
