Being from Michigan, Rob Leary is used to seeing deer, but even he was surprised by the big bucks he spotted around Palos Heights on a Christmas visit, and took a couple nice photos to earn Buck of the Week: Unplugged honors.

BOTW: Unplugged is a weekly celebration of live big bucks around Chicago outdoors and the suburbs. It runs Sundays in the outdoors page of the Sun-Times. An extended online version is usually posted here Saturday or Sunday.

Here’s Leary’s explanation:

Being from Michigan I am usually not amazed by deer, but I was pleasantly surprised to see some beauties in Palos Heights while walking my dog. I was there visiting the family for Christmas, and it was a great sight to see some giant bucks. It’s difficult to catch these creatures on film, but here are two of my best. . . .

I agree it is tough to take good buck photos. I only have a handful. And I truly appreciate the ones that people have been sending in for the past few months. It’s not easy, especially of the wilder ones, such as those around Palos.
