Frank Kibith found the biggest morel I have seen from the Chicago area, and it takes Morel of the Week honors.

In early May, his friend Jerry Shomo sent the photo with this note:

dale, this one was found by my friend frank kubith.we were at his secret spot by wolf lake two weeks ago.we also got a couple dozen more in the same area.

In a followup e-mail this week, Shomo sent this, “Also here is the big batch.not much out there now.”

That’s a sad thing, I think he is right. We are nearing the end for morels. I have not found any in two weeks, and other readers have said the same.

Though It has slowed down, I received quite a few good nominations this month. So I may run MOTW, which tops the Field Notes on the outdours page of the Sun-Times each Sunday, well into June. An online version appears here, usually on Sunday.

E-mail MOTW nominations to outdoordb@sbcglobal.net.
