There were news reports over the weekend that the Vermilion River west of Starved Rock State Park will reopen to paddlers this year.

The Vermilion, primarily because of this patch of water above, is considered the one quality rafting experience in Illinois.

Concern over safety issues near a low dam in another stretch of water caused the landowner, Buzzi Unicem mining company, to shut down the river last year.
