Days after being acquitted of killing dad, Glendale Heights man back in jail

1-27-2009 DuPage Co. Sherrif's Office handout mugshot of murder suspect George Panos Jr. charged for smothering his father.

George M. Panos had barely a week of freedom after being acquitted last month of charges he smothered his ailing father.

The 47-year-old Panos is back in the DuPage County Jail following his arrest 10 days after his Oct. 28 acquittal on murder charges.

Panos was charged Nov. 7 with failing to register as a sex offender – a requirement initially imposed after he was convicted of sexually abusing a teenage boy in 2008.

Authorities said the former Glendale Heights man failed to register as a sex offender within seven days of his release from the jail after he was found not guilty of murdering his father, 78-year-old George J. Panos.

While Panos was ordered to register as a sex offender after being convicted of misdemeanor sex abuse, the new charge filed against him is a felony that carries a maximum five-year prison term.

His attorney couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.
