Quenneville suffered from internal bleeding

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days after getting treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding.

Hawks head team physician Michael Terry said Thursday “a small ulcer caused by aspirin” led to the internal bleeding.

Quenneville, 52, was hospitalized early Wednesday after feeling “severe discomfort” Tuesday night in his suburban Chicago home.

“He is resting comfortably at the hospital and we anticipate him to make a full recovery and to be released in the next few days,” Terry said. “At the appropriate time, we will update everyone regarding his release from the hospital and return to the Blackhawks bench.”

Acting head coach Mike Haviland spoke with Quenneville after the Hawks’ 3-1 win against the Minnesota Wild Wednesday night. Assistant coach Mike Kitchen also visited Quenneville in the hospital after the game.

“We talked about the game and he watched the majority of it,” Haviland said after practice Thursday at Johnny’s IceHouse West. “He was very pleased and very happy about the game. I know he had some tests [Thursday]. … He was in really good spirits. He was joking and laughing on the phone. So it was good to hear.”

Winger Patrick Kane said he received a text from Quenneville after the game. Other players also exchanged texts with Quenneville.

“It’s good to hear he’s doing better and it’s a good thing to hear,” Kane said. “You hear someone is in the hospital … and you never know what’s going to come of it. I’m not sure what’s going on with him heath-wise. I think he’s still doing tests. But it’s good to hear he’s doing better and hopefully we’ll get him back soon.”
