Chicago Crush of the Month: Landree Fleming

SHARE Chicago Crush of the Month: Landree Fleming

My love for redheads seems inherent. In first grade, I chose a best friend based on, to quote Dolly Parton, her flaming locks of auburn hair. Turned out the kid was one of five siblings, each albino-pale and raised by Mormon hoarders. I practically lived at her house, but I never saw the floor. Once when I got sick, her mother offered me a diet coke. Best thing when youre feverish, she said. Not my kind of people, but that girls hair kept me hooked.

In sixth grade, my hearts brutal tentacles seized on another ginger, this time a male classmate: Irish, skinny, always ready with a funny quip. Well, funny to a sixth grader; Im not sure he could go head to head with Tina Fey. Though not my first boy-crush, this one brought out the stalker in me (the original title of Joan Armatradings hit song). I called the kids house no less than five times a night until he confronted me on the playground after school.

You calling my house? (Crossed arms and steady eyes, guy was on a mission.)

I dont speak English. (I was a quick thinker, even then.)

You gotta stop. (He didnt waver.)

What I meant was, I dont have a phone. (Nor did I.)

Everyones got a phone. (I have nothing to add here.)

Not me. I dont even have a house, my familys too poor. (Nor here.)

Isnt that your mom over there in the Volvo? (I like parenthesis.)

Thats where we live.

And that, my friends, is how I got my first restraining order.

Years later, Im still a sucker for a redhead, which brings me to Landree Fleming. An up and coming singer/actress and member of comedy/burlesque troupe, Off Off Broadzway, Landree is more than a redhead, shes Marchs Crush.

Our Town What brought you to Chicago?

Landree Fleming I wanted to work in a larger market. The work done here has always been attractive to me. It’s comedic, serious, quirky, edgy, new, classic–everything an artist could want. Not to mention ample opportunity to create and perform original work.

OT How did you get involved with The Broadz?

LF They posted an audition with a link to their rap video “Populah“. We auditionees had to write a new character and perform a song. I got called back, and the rest is glorious, smutty history!

OT Describe your Broadz character.

LF Maddie Scientits is a D & D player’s wet dream: Intelligent [and] strong-willed, she embraces her nerdiness. But [she] loves the sound of her own voice. Plus she has zero common sense. In most respects, I’m very much like her.

OT The Broadz will be performing in New Orleans soon. How did that come about?

LF We wanted to go on the road and spread the sexy, and we have some wonderful connections, so we thought why not? The Broadz take on Bourbon Street! Booze and Tops of Boobs–It’s a perfect match. We’re currently fund-raising on ChipIn, if any of you kind, generous readers want to donate. Please note the ridiculous things we will do for your money.

OT Describe your perfect day.

LF A gorgeous autumn day: Id have a delicious cup of coffee, then run a marathon, because hey, in a perfect world I could do that easily! The rest would be filled with reading and going to the movie theatre with my guy [and] close friends visiting. [It] would culminate in a Broadz performance, Indian food for dinner, and a Bloody Mary bar. This day would also be 48 hours long.

OT Relationship Deal breaker?

LF If you’re not funny, you won’t get to first base. Also, don’t sleep with other ladies or dudes.

OT Who was your first crush?

LF Jonathan, from New Kids on the Block. So serious. So dark. So dreamy.

OT Why are you crushworthy?

FL Im endearingly flawed.

OT Any questions for me?

LF Could you please stop sending my boyfriend hate mail?

Catch Landree this spring in “Pills” with The Black Ship Co. at Gorilla Tango, as well as with The Broadz in “We Changed our Pannies,” at Stage 773.
