WASHINGTON–President Obama on Wednesday tapped Commerce Secretary Gary Locke–the grandson of a Chinese immigrant–to be the new U.S. Ambassador to China. He will replace John Huntsman, a Republican who is stepping down–possibly to run for president.
Locke noted that his grandfather worked in the U.S. as a “houseboy.” His grandfather went back to China–where Locke’s father was born–and his dad eventually came to the U.S.
A sign how important the U.S.–Chinese relationship is: Locke was flanked by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Obama at the announcement.
