MAYOR-ELECT RAHM EMANUEL ANNOUNCES CITY COLLEGES OF CHICAGO LEADERSHIP TEAM

This morning, Mayor-elect Emanuel announced the diverse group of non-profit, business, legal and religious leaders who will lead the City Colleges of Chicago Board. Ellen Alberding, Charles Jenkins, Marisela Lawson, Larry R. Rogers, Sr., and Paula Wolff will join the current Board Chairman Martin Cabrera, Jr., and Trustee Everett Rand. The Mayor-elect also announced his intention to keep Chancellor Cheryl Hyman in her current position.

Speaking at Olive-Harvey College, the Mayor-elect discussed the importance of the Chicago’s community college system. “The Board will continue to implement the top-to-bottom Reinvention of the City Colleges of Chicago that began in 2010,” Emanuel said. “The leaders I have appointed today will kick the implementation into higher gear and achieve results for the students who depend on Chicago’s City Colleges to get them to college or a job.”

City Colleges of Chicago Leadership

Cheryl Hyman, Chancellor

Cheryl Hyman currently serves as the Chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago. Prior to that Hyman was the Vice President of Operations Strategy and Business Intelligence at ComEd. Hyman serves as the Advisory Board Chairman for the Black Star Project, which connects Exelon’s African American Members Association with local schools to promote and reinforce the importance of education in students’ lives. Hyman was also elected to the Board of Directors for the Night Ministry, an organization that serves homeless and runaway youth. Hyman earned a Associate Degree from Olive-Harvey College, a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, a Master’s in Community Development from North Park University and her MBA from Northwestern University.

Martin Cabrera, Jr., Board Chairman

Martin Cabrera, Jr. currently serves as the City Colleges of Chicago Board Chairman. He is the CEO and founder of Cabrera Capital Markets, LLC. Cabrera recently founded a second investment management firm, Cabrera Capital Partners LLC. Cabrera also serves on numerous civic boards, including the Erikson Institute and the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Science and Industry. He is the Co-Chair of the New America Alliance’s Pension Fund Initiative, the Commissioner of the Public Building Commission of Chicago. Cabrera also is an active sponsor of the Stock Market Game, a nationwide program that teaches financial literacy and the operations of the capital markets to students in grades 4-12.

Ellen Alberding, City Colleges Vice Chairman

Ellen Alberding is president and a board member of the Joyce Foundation. Alberding is a founder and board member of Advance Illinois, which advocates for public education reform in Illinois. She has also served as president and chairman of the investment committee for the Chicago Park District pension fund. Alberding is a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Chicago Network, and serves on the advisory boards of several nonprofit organizations. Alberding received her Bachelor’s in English from Brown University and a Masters of Management in finance and marketing from Northwestern University.

Charles Jenkins, Trustee

Charles Jenkins is pastor of the historic Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Jenkins is committed to underserved communities, leading initiatives that promote education, economic development, economic empowerment and wealth creation. Jenkins serves on a number of corporate, educational, governmental and religious boards including Clear Channel Chicago Advisory Board, Advocate Health Advisory Board, The Hilliard Vocational Institute, Illinois Attorney General Advisory Board, Illinois Treasurer Advisory Board, and Daystar School Board of Directors. Jenkins also serves as a State Commissioner on the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission. Jenkins earned his Bachelor of Science in Christian Education from Moody Bible Institute and his Masters of Art in Religion from the Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

Marisela Lawson, Trustee

Marisela Lawson is a partner and founder at Sagence Group. Lawson’s experience in management consulting is extensive. Before joining Sagence Group, Lawson served as Director of Business Intelligence for Forsythe Solutions Group working with different functions including sales, marketing, operations, and product groups, to increase sales. Lawson also served a Principal at Diamond Management & Technology Consultants and a senior consultant at Accenture. Lawson earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from DePaul University.

Everett Rand, Trustee

Everett Rand currently serves as a Trustee on the City Colleges of Chicago Board. He is part-owner of Midway Airport Concessions, a Chicago-based management company that operates the food and beverage program at Midway Airport, including the Harry Carey’s restaurant in the Concessions Triangle and six popular Chicago restaurants at Midway Airport. Rand is also president and CEO of Midway Wholesale Beverage, Inc. Additionally Rand hosts the Chicago Football Classic to promote higher education and support Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Larry R. Rogers, Sr., Trustee

Larry R. Rogers, Sr. is one of the founding partners of the Cook County law firm Power Rogers & Smith. A native South Sider, Rogers has dedicated more than two decades of his career to representing the most difficult personal injury and wrongful death cases. A leader in the personal injury field, Rogers was elected president of both the Cook County Bar Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, serving as the latter’s first African American president. Rogers has been honored with numerous awards, including the Richard E. Westbrook Award for legal excellence from the Cook County Bar Association and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Black Law Students Association of DePaul University.

Paula Wolff, Trustee

Paula Wolff is a Senior Executive at Metropolis Strategies, a business and civic organization implementing policy initiatives and programs for regional action on issues including land use, transportation, childhood development and education. Prior to her work at Chicago Metropolis 2020, Wolff served as President of Governors State University. Previously, Wolff served as Director of Policy and Planning for Governor James R. Thompson. Wolff currently serves on numerous boards, including the Joyce Foundation, the Ariel Investments Board, the Metropolitan Planning Council, the Johnson Foundation, the Safer Foundation, and the University of Chicago’s Board of Trustees. Wolff earned a B.A. from Smith College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in political science.
