DAILY GUIDANCE AND PRESS SCHEDULE FOR

FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2011

In the morning, the President will meet with participants in the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike, an iconic campaign in civil rights and labor rights history, when public workers banded together for dignity, respect and a better life. This will be the first visit to the White House for the strikers. Following the meeting with the President, the Department of Labor will begin the induction ceremony of all participants of the Memphis Sanitation Strike into the Labor Hall of Fame. The meeting with the President is closed press. Later in the morning, the First Family will travel to Alabama. The departure from the South Lawn and the arrival at Tuscaloosa Regional Airport are open press. In Alabama, the President and the First Lady will view the damage as well as meet with Governor Bentley, state and local officials and families affected by the storms. There will be travel pool coverage of the First Family’s visit.

After, the First Family will travel to Cape Canaveral, Florida. The departure from Tuscaloosa Regional Airport and the arrival at Cape Canaveral Skid Strip are open press.

In Cape Canaveral, the First Family will tour the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) at the Kennedy Space Center. The OPF is a large hangar where space shuttle orbiters are maintained, tested and inspected between flights. The space shuttle Atlantis is currently undergoing preparations for its June 2011 flight at this facility. The First Family will be led on the tour by Astronaut Janet Kavandi. Dr. Kavandi is the Director of Flight Crew Operations for the Johnson Space Center and is a three-flight veteran, having logged more than 33 days in space. The First Family’s tour of the facility has two stops. In the first stop, they will see a tile and water demonstration showing how the shuttle’s tiles can retain water. In the second stop, the First Family will see a close-up view of the landing gear from beneath the nose of the Atlantis shuttle. The First Family’s tour of the Orbiter Processing Facility will be travel pool coverage.

The First Family will then view the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour with NASA Director Charles Bolden, Jr. and astronaut Dr. Janet Kavandi. The viewing will be travel pool coverage.

The President will then travel to Miami, Florida. In Miami, the President will deliver the Miami Dade College commencement address. The commencement address is pooled for TV, open to pre-credentialed correspondents and still photographers.

Later in the evening, the President will return to Washington, DC. The departure from Miami International Airport and the arrival on the South Lawn are open press.
