WEEKEND GUIDANCE AND PRESS SCHEDULE FOR

SUNDAY, MAY 29, AND MONDAY, MAY 30, 2011

On Sunday, the President will travel to Joplin, Missouri. The President’s departure from the South Lawn and the arrival at Joplin Regional Airport are open press.

While in Joplin, the President will visit with those in the community who lost so much during last week’s deadly, historic tornadoes. The President’s visit with the community will be travel pool coverage. The President will see firsthand the devastation caused by the storms and deliver brief remarks at a memorial service held by local clergy and Missouri Governor Jay Nixon for those who lost their lives. The President’s remarks at Missouri Southern University are open press.

Later in the afternoon, the President will return to Washington, DC. The President’s departure from Joplin Regional Airport and the arrival on the South Lawn are open press.

On Monday, the President and First Lady will host a breakfast for Gold Star Families in the State Dining Room. This event will be closed press.

Afterwards, the President will make Department of Defense personnel announcements in the Rose Garden. The President’s personnel announcements are open press.

Later in the morning, the President and First Lady will visit Arlington National Cemetery where the President will participate in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. This event is open to pre-credentialed media.

Following the wreath laying ceremony, the President will participate in the Memorial Day Service at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery. U.S. Army Military District of Washington Command Chaplain (Colonel) Steve Berry, will deliver the invocation, followed by remarks from Admiral Mike Mullen, Secretary Robert Gates and President Obama. The First Lady will also attend. This event is open to pre-credentialed media.
