Upcoming Guidance for First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden

Wednesday, July 20th – Washington, D.C.: First Lady Michelle Obama will make a major announcement regarding access to healthy, affordable food. Currently, 23.5 million Americans – including 6.5 million children – live in low-income areas that lack stores likely to sell affordable and nutritious foods. Studies show that communities with greater access to supermarkets consume more nutritious foods which is why the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity identified access to healthy, affordable foods as one of the key pillars to solving the childhood obesity epidemic. The task force recommended a comprehensive approach that mobilizes public and private sector resources to make the healthy choice the easy choice for all Americans. Thursday, July 21st – Virginia Beach, Va.: First Lady Michelle Obama will visit Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana where she will tour NAS Oceana’s Youth Program’s Summer Camp. As part of the Joining Forces Movie Series – where major movie studios including Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal and Fox are hosting special movie screenings for military families – Mrs. Obama will welcome hundreds of local military families who will be treated to a special screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Last month President Obama kicked off the Joining Forces Movie Series with a screening of Disney’s Cars 2 at the White House. Mrs. Obama’s NAS Oceana tour will be pooled press; her welcome at the movie screening will be open press.

Thursday, July 21st – Fayetteville, N.C.: As part of her Joining Forces initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama will participate in an “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” episode featuring the Marshalls, a military family. Barbara Marshall is a 15-year Navy Veteran who is working to end homelessness among female veterans. Barbara created The Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House which provides homeless female veterans with housing and support services. Mrs. Obama and the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team will help build a new Jubilee House that can serve multiple families and act as a resource center for female veterans. This visit will be closed press and this episode will air in October.

Sunday, July 24th – Manchester, N.H.: First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Biden will host a Joining Forces event for National Guard and Reserve families in the early evening….. Earlier in the day, Dr. Biden will visit the Portsmouth area to meet with New Hampshire National Guard family support providers and attend a local military families appreciation event. More details on these events will be released in the coming days.
