WASHINGTON–President Obama cancelled a major donor event in New York on Tuesday to stay at the White House to deal with the debt talks, faced with the looming Aug. 2 default deadline.
The event–for elite fund-raisers– had been planned to take place at the Manhattan home of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein to jointly benefit Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
A DNC spokesman told me the fund-raiser was “scheduled but it was pulled down because of the deficit talks.”
I reported Monday that if there is no deal on Aug. 2, Obama will postpone his Aug. 3 mega fund-raiser in Chicago, a series of events, including a concert at the Aragon Ballroom pegged to his 50th birthday on Aug. 4.
Meanwhile, the fertile New York turf is not being left unplowed by the Obama team fund-raisers. I also reported Monday Mayor Rahm Emanuel hits Manhattan on Thursday for three fund-raisers, starting with a breakfast, then a noon event and a reception in the early evening.
I also reported Monday the First Lady Michelle Obama headlines major donor fund-raisers at a July 26 daytrip to Park City, Utah and Aspen, Col.
