Mulling things on my morning ramble
with Storm, the family’s mixed Lab.
How do you explain these things?
Yesterday, the meathead and I set out at virtually the same time, a little before 6 a.m. And more than 100 Canada geese landed on the town pond and dozens of others sailed on to the cornfields.
This morning, I didn’t hear a single goose, didn’t see a single goose flying over or out in the fields on the far edge of the extended ramble.
I had hoped to sleep in this morning, but I came awake as usual at 4 a.m., what would have been my usual time of 5 a.m. before the time change Saturday night.
I stayed up last night all the way through to the President Obama’s reelection speech, though my wife had to yell at me to wake me up when he finally made it well after midnight.
I enjoy Obama’s speeches, just the sheer power and wonder of them.
Usually I get caught in the flow and am swept along. But last night, well real early this morning, I was jarred wide awake by a mention of global warming when he talked about ”the destructive power of a warming planet.”
Both Gov. Mitt Romney and Obama are smart guys and know the impact of global warming. Yet both shied away from it during the election.
It was good to hear some out front mention of global warming finally. Would have been even nicer to hear both candidates discuss it more before the election.
My wife is addicted to politics. I am to a slightly lesser degree, but had settled into a combination of watching on TV and listening on WGN-AM about 7 p.m. and fully expected to maybe still be watching by the time it was time to take the meathead on his morning ramble.
But it was over relatively early.
That gave me time to fully enjoy an extended conversation between former Gov. Jim Edgar and Carol Marin on NBC5.
It would behoove Republicans, both in Illinois and nationally, to listen to what he said last night.
Listening to him I couldn’t help wonder what happened to Republicans like Edgar. Did they all get shouted down by the loud fringe? Chased out of politics by them?
I hope not.
Back in town, one gray squirrel ran down a line between two poles. That was it for wildlife.
Yellow light spilled from the early aerobics class at the storefront gym.
We had rambled out in drizzle, fog and darkness, then walked up the porch steps in clearing skies and building light.
I want to hang on to that image.
