The Red Cross is mobilizing out of the Peoria chapter to provide relief in Washington, Ill. after the town was hit by a tornado Sunday.
Teams will provide food and immediate relief in the aftermath of the tornado, and a shelter will be set up at the Cressroads United Methodist Church at 1420 North Main Street.
“There’s quite a few people that are hurt. Their houses are gone,” town alderman Tyler Gee told WBBM. “I went over there immediately after the tornado, walking through the neighborhoods, and I couldn’t even tell what street I was on. Just completely flattened – some of the neighborhoods here in town. Hundreds of homes.”
The Associated Press that some people are trapped in buildings. Spotty cell phone signals may be hampering operations.
The town of 10,000 is near Peoria, some 120 miles southwest of Chicago.
