Radio Waves: Olaf Nelson on Illinois' first alligator gar since 1966

SHARE Radio Waves: Olaf Nelson on Illinois' first alligator gar since 1966

Olaf Nelson talks about being the first to catch an alligator gar in Illinois since 1966 and other topics related to his conversion to a focus on native fishes this afternoon on “Outside.”

The story of catching the first alligator gar since 1966 in Illinois is a worthy enough tale, but equally important is Nelson’s interest in helping people, especially fishermen, understand native fishes.

His specialty is suckers, with a focus on redhorses, as ishown by his web site moxostoma.com.

You could say he wears his love of native fishes, as his tee-shirt shows when he came into the WKCC studios.

“Outside” airs from 4:30-5 p.m. Mondays on WKCC-FM (91.1) in Kankakee. The rebroadcasts are at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays.
