New Holland Brewing makes a lot of nice beers over in southwestern Michigan, and this time of year the clear stand-out is its oatmeal stout, The Poet. It is smoky and chocolatey and velvety on the tongue — kind of like “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe, clearly the beer’s spiritual guide. Enjoy it with roasted meats, chocolate or just on its own. It will warm up your winter night. Pick up a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles ($9.50) at Treasure Island (various locations).
