J. C. Penney Co. announced Wednesday it will close 33 underperforming stores nationwide, including one in Bloomingdale’s Stratford Square Mall, by early May.
About 2,000 jobs will be lost because of the store closings.
“While it’s always difficult to make a business decision that impacts our valued customers and associates, this important step addresses a strategic priority to improve the profitability of our stores and position JCPenney for future success.” CEO Myron E. Ullman III said in a news release.
Penney will close two stores Illinois (in Bloomingdale and downstate Forsythe) and two in Indiana (in Marion and Warsaw). The full list (pdf) from J.C. Penney.
The Plano, Texas,-based company has about 1,100 stores.
