Sales of single-family homes and condominiums soared 23 percent last year in the nine-county Chicago metro area. Sales totaled 111,427 in the region, up from 90,608 in all of 2012, the Illinois Association of Realtors reported Thursday. The median price was $177,500, up 10.9 percent from 2012.

“The year 2013 was a good one for the housing market and the prospects for the early part of 2014 appear equally positive,” said Geoffrey J.D. Hewings, Director of the Regional Economics Applications Laboratory of the University of Illinois.
