Student’s art project prompts bomb scare on South Side

A South Side intersection was shut down for nearly two hours Thursday morning while authorities responded to a suspicious object that turned out to be an art project.

The suspicious object at 79th and Western was reported at 9:43 a.m., police said.

The Bomb and Arson Unit responded and determined the object was not threatening about two hours later, police said.

Police said the object turned out to be a student’s art project.

No. 49 Western buses were rerouted in the area during the investigation, according to the CTA.
