OSHA: Contractors exposed to cave-in hazards in Morton Grove

(MORTON GROVE) A local construction company is facing nearly $70,000 in fines after two workers were exposed to cave-in hazards on a job in north suburban Morton Grove.

A. Lamp Concrete Contractors Inc., which is based in Schaumburg, was cited for one willful violation for failing to protect workers from cave-ins during trenching operations, according to a statement from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

An inspector saw two employees working in a trench more than 8 feet deep without cave-in protection, while they were installing a water main at Golf Road and Sayre Avenue in Morton Grove on June 4, according to the statement.

A willful violation is one committed with intentional, knowing or voluntary disregard for the law’s requirements, or with plain indifference to worker safety and health.

The proposed penalty totals $69,300, according to the statement.

The company was previously cited in 2010 and 2008 for trenching violations, according to the statement.
