(GLENVIEW) A medical condition led to the “unexpected” death of an on-duty north suburban police officer Saturday night, though the exact cause of death remains unknown.

Glenview police Ofcr. Owen Masterton, 42, was working a patrol shift when he died about 6:30 p.m. at police headquarters at 2500 E. Lake Ave., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy on Sunday was inconclusive, with results pending, according to the medical examiner’s office. A statement from the Village of Glenview said the cause of death was a “medical event.”

Masterton joined the department in 1995, spending time as a firearms instructor, evidence technician and patrol officer, as well as a member of the community relations unit.

“He was a fine officer,” Chief William Fitzpatrick said in the statement. “He served this community for more than 19 years and was well respected among his peers.”

Masterton lived in Gurnee with his wife and 10-year-old son. He is also survived by his mother and several siblings, according to the village.

A public wake will be conducted from 2 -8 p.m. Friday at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home at 1240 Waukegan Rd. in Glenview. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 1775 Grove St. in Glenview, with a private burial service to follow.
