Weekend roadwork planned for four expressways, Lake Shore Drive

If you’re heading out this weekend, plan accordingly: Construction will close lanes on the Kennedy, Edens, Eisenhower and Stevenson expressways and part of Lake Shore Drive.

On the Northwest Side, bridge repairs will tie up traffic on both the inbound Kennedy (I-90/94) and the inbound Edens (I-94) from late Saturday into Sunday morning between Lawrence and Irving Park, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.

The two right lanes of both expressways will be closed inbound from Lawrence Avenue to the Edens/Kennedy junction, and three inbound lanes will be closed between the junction and Irving Park Road, IDOT said.

The Kennedy reversible lanes will be open to help alleviate congestion, and the closed lanes should reopen at 8 a.m. Sunday, IDOT said.

More bridge work will tie up traffic on the Kennedy around Addison on Saturday and Sunday mornings. A moving closure will shut down two local lanes of the Kennedy near Addison Street from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday so crews can inspect bridges, IDOT said.

A similar closure will happen in outbound lanes Sunday at the same time, also near Addison, IDOT said. At least two lanes will remain open to traffic on both days despite the work.

Downtown, a portion of Lake Shore Drive over the Chicago River will be closed starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, as crews repair and perform maintenance work on the roadway’s bridge, the Chicago Department of Transportation said.

Traffic on both upper and lower Lake Shore Drive will be detoured around the work via the Columbus Drive bridge and other side streets, CDOT said. The closure lasts until 6 a.m. Sunday.

In the near west suburbs, maintenance work will close the left lane of the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) between 1st Avenue and Mannheim Road, IDOT said. The closure lasts from 11 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday.

On the Southwest Side, a routine inspection of the Pulaski Road Bridge on the Stephenson Expressway (I-55) will cause lane closures in both directions on the expressway between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday, IDOT said. Two left lanes will remain open on both the inbound and outbound sides.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through these construction areas, IDOT said.
