(MUNDELEIN) A 72-year-old man was killed when he stepped into traffic and was hit by a car near his northwest suburban home on Sunday.
Arturo Carranza, who lived in unincorporated Mundelein, was attempting to cross Route 45 near Ridge Avenue/Edgar Allen Poe Lane at 5:17 p.m. when a Ford Mustang heading south on Route 45 struck him, Mundelein Deputy police Chief Don Hansen said.
“He stepped into traffic in front of the car,” he said.
Carranza was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he died about 4 a.m., Hansen said.
The driver, a Texas man who is staying in the area, stopped at the scene and has been cooperative with police, Hansen said. No charges or citations are expected and there are no apparent signs of drugs or alcohol contributing to the crash.
“The intersection is well lit, but there is no control device there so traffic flows normally,” Hansen earlier told Pioneer Press. “However, a lot of pedestrians cross there. It’s not unusual. It was a Sunday night. Traffic wasn’t heavy, but it was steady.”
Route 45 was closed for several hours after the crash. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating.
