Man who got out of vehicle to urinate fatally struck by taxi

(SCHAUMBURG) A man who got out of a vehicle to urinate on the side of the road was fatally struck by a taxi early Sunday in the northwest suburbs.

About 1:30 a.m., 20-year-old Edi Carreto-Silva was walking across Higgins Road, just east of I-290, when a vehicle struck him, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and Illinois State Police.

Carreto-Silva, of the 100 block of Bar Harbour Road in Schaumburg, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:39 a.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Carreto-Silva was a passenger in a vehicle eastbound on Higgins Road, police said. The female driver stopped in the roadway and Carreto Silva exited the vehicle and crossed all lanes of traffic to urinate on the side of the road near a grassy ditch.

When he began crossing all lanes of traffic again to return to the vehicle, he was struck by a 2007 Honda van taxi, police said.

No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.
