(JOLIET) A man was killed and a woman was critically hurt in a motorcycle crash last Thursday in southwest suburban Joliet.

Patrick McDermott, 52, left a bar in the 700 block of Railroad Street about 9 p.m. on his motorcycle with a woman passenger and was traveling northbound when he tried to change lanes and pulled in front of another vehicle, and the two collided, according to Joliet police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Neither McDermott or his passenger were wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. Both were taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

McDermott was later airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 1:52 a.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The woman was also transferred to Loyola, where she remains in critical condition, according to police.

An autopsy performed Saturday found McDermott, of the 1500 block of Steinly Avenue in Joliet, died of multiple injuries he suffered in the crash and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

Police said McDermott was at the bar before the crash planning a benefit for another person who had recently been killed in a crash. No alcohol was found in his system, or in the driver of the other vehicle.

No charges or citations were issued in connection with the crash.
