Man charged with robbing Beverly Starbucks, CVS several times

A Far South Side man has been charged robbing CVS and Starbucks stores in the South Side Beverly neighborhood because they were close to his home.

Garrick Turner, 24, faces three felony counts of aggravated robbery after officers caught him robbing the Starbucks in the 1900 block of West 103rd Street, according to police and court records.

Officers set up a surveillance operation in the Starbucks after it was robbed multiple times in the last several months, according to a police report.

A few minutes before 6 a.m. Sunday, Turner allegedly covered his face with a black scarf and entered Starbucks with his hand over an object in his left pocket, according to the report.

He told an employee to open the safe, and the employee put cash from the register into a brown paper Starbucks bag, police said.

An officer watching the robbery from a surveillance camera in a back room came out and announced his position, and Turner took off out the south door of the coffee shop, according to the report.

Officers followed him and arrested him in a front yard nearby, according the report. The object in his pocket turned out to be a cell phone.

Turner allegedly confessed to robbing the Starbucks two other times and a CVS across the street three times. He told police he chose those locations because they were close to his home in the 10300 block of South Hale Avenue, according to the report.

He was ordered held in lieu of a $300,000 bond Monday.
