A 76-year-old woman was shot Wednesday evening in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder about 6:45 p.m. while she was driving near West 40th Street and South Artesian Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Stacey Cooper said.

She drove to Garfield Boulevard and Western Avenue, where rescue crews picked her up and took her in serious condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

Area Central detectives are investigating.
