One woman was injured Tuesday evening when a fire broke out at a Douglas neighborhood apartment building on the South Side.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 5:30 p.m. at a six-unit apartment building in the 2900 block of South Federal Street, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

One woman, whose age was not immediately known, was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Knight said. No one else was injured in the fire and it was not immediately known how many residents were displaced.

The fire started on the building’s first floor, and was extinguished about 6 p.m., Knight said. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
