(ELGIN) Police are searching for an inmate who escaped from mental health center Wednesday morning in northwest suburban Elgin, and warning people to stay away from him.

Jesse Vega, who has “several warrants,” escaped from custody at the Elgin Mental Health Center near Seneca Street and Dundee Avenue, according to Elgin police.

Vega is described as a 5-foot-8, 160-pound Hispanic man who was last seen wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, white shoes and handcuffs, police said. He has tattoos on both arms.

Anyone who sees Vega is advised not to approach him and instead to call 911.

The 59-year-old was found about 7 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Chappel Avenue with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, police said.
