(MARKHAM) A northwest Indiana man is facing several felony charges after he pointed a gun at a police early Sunday in south suburban Harvey, a city spokesman said.

William Smith

William Smith, 22, of Hammond, Ind., was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated assault, according to a statement from Harvey spokesman Sean Howard.

A few minutes after midnight on Sept. 7, Harvey police received a call of shots fired near 156th and Dixie Highway, Howard said.

Officers saw a man with a gun running away from the area, Howard said. As officers chased, he allegedly turned and pointed the gun at them.

An officer, “in the fear and safety of his life,” shot the 22-year-old man, Howard said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and treated for his injuries.

Howard said the suspect’s gun was recovered and sent to the Illinois State Police crime lab.

At the Markham Courthouse on Wednesday, Smith was ordered held in the Cook County Jail on a $500,000 bond, Howard said.
