(FRANKLIN PARK) An electric transformer exploded Tuesday morning in west suburban Franklin Park, causing a fire at a nearby business.

Firefighters responded to the explosion about 11:50 a.m. in the 9400 block of Schiller Boulevard, according to Franklin Park Fire Department Lt. David Richter.

The exterior of a nearby roofing business caught fire and one employee that was inside at the time had to be evacuated, Richter said.

No one was in injured in the blaze, which was extinguished within about 30 minutes, Richter said.

Only one resident is without power as a result of the downed transformer, according to a ComEd spokesperson. Crews were at the scene replacing the transformer as of 3:15 p.m.

The building did not suffer structural damage and the business was “up and running,” Richter said.
