(CRYSTAL LAKE) A northwest suburban homeowner shot one of two men who forced their way into his home near Crystal Lake on Tuesday morning, according to police.

Nicolas Porcayo, 18; and Brandon Mendez, 19, came to the home in the 7300 block of Oakwood Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake early Tuesday and demanded to speak to the residents, according to a statement from the McHenry County sheriff’s office.

They kicked down a locked door, and the homeowner—who was armed with a firearm—demanded they leave, according to the statement. The men refused to leave, and the homeowner shot Mendez in the abdomen.

Mendez was hospitalized and is expected to survive, according to the sheriff’s office.

Porcayo, who is homeless; and Mendez, of Crystal Lake, were each charged with intimidation and trespass to residence, both felonies, according to police. Both are scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday.

The case remains under investigation and additional charges may be filed, according to police.
