A man died after he was run over by a vehicle a week ago in West Garfield Park.

Vernon Smith, 59, was lying on the ground in front of a garage door in the 4000 block of West Van Buren at 6:25 p.m. last Wednesday when a driver reversed out of the garage and ran him over, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Smith, of the 4000 block of West Gladys, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 4:09 a.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy found Smith died of complications from multiple injuries from being struck by a vehicle, with chronic alcoholism a contributing factor. His death was ruled an accident.

The driver was not cited, police said.
