A Round Lake teenager was fatally struck by a Metra train Thursday evening in the northwestern suburb.

Milwaukee District / North line train 2129 was traveling between the Round Lake and Long Lake stations when it struck the pedestrian just before 6 p.m., Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

The engineer said he saw a person standing between the tracks just west of a ComEd property, Reile said. The engineer put on the emergency brakes but could not stop the train in time.

The pedestrian was later identified as Daniel A. Mears, 17, of Round Lake, Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd said.

The coroner’s office has not yet ruled on whether the death was an accident or a suicide, Rudd said.

Trains were halted for more than an hour in both directions as crews investigated, according to Metra.
