A family has been displaced after a fire in their northwest suburban Elgin home Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the home at 70 Maple St. in Elgin at 12:17 p.m., according to a statement from the Elgin fire department. Someone who was inside the home and called 911 was trying to get his elderly grandfather out of the house during the blaze.

Crews found a two-story, single family home with smoke coming out of bedroom windows on the second floor, according to the statement. The firefighters got all of the residents out of the home safely and the blaze was under control within three minutes, the statement said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the homeowner admitted to burning incense in his bedroom earlier in that day. He said he thought he had put the incense out before going downstairs.

The elderly man was treated at the scene and released, according to the statement. No other injuries were reported.

The damage to the house is estimated to be $25,000, according to the statement. The home was deemed uninhabitable due to smoke and fire damage.

The family that was displaced is going to live with relatives nearby, according to the statement.
