Starting next week, the only way to apply for a Firearm Owner Identification, or FOID card, will be online.
Illinois State Police will transition to an online-only application process March 16, according to a statement from the agency. Paper applications will not be accepted after March 9.
For those who don’t have Internet access, prospective gun owners can call the department’s call center, which will have staff input their data online, the statement said.
All new applicants will need to register with state police by providing key identifiers found on their Illinois driver’s license or state ID card. They will also need to create a username and password, and answer a series of four security questions.
Applicants will no longer be required to obtain a state digital ID through the Department of Central Management Services. This login change will allow users accessibility to the new application process, the statement said.
