A man was killed and another hurt in a Back of the Yards neighborhood traffic crash Sunday afternoon on the South Side.

The two-car accident happened about 2:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of South Ashland, police News Affairs Officer Bari Lemmon said.

A 59-year-old man behind the wheel of a parked Chrysler facing north on Ashland put the car into gear and tried to make a U-turn, Lemmon said. His car then collided with a northbound Volkswagen.

The Chrysler’s driver and a 51-year-old man in the passenger seat were both taken to Stroger Hospital, where the older man died, according to police and fire officials. The younger man was listed in fair condition.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality but did not release additional details.

Four people in the Volkswagen declined medical treatment, authorities said.

The police Major Accident Investigations Unit is handling the case.
