A man was fatally struck by an outbound Metra train Saturday night on the Union Pacific / Northwest Line in northwest suburban Palatine.

Train No. 725, scheduled to arrive in Harvard at 10:20 p.m., struck the person about 9:30 p.m. near Colfax Street and Quentin Road, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

The man, 30, walked onto the tracks moments before the train reached him, according to a statement from Palatine police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Train No. 725 was on the move again about 11:45 p.m., but operating 146 minutes behind schedule, according to Metra.

Palatine police and Metra police are investigating the incident.
