Outdoor celebrations for Mother’s Day may need to be moved inside because of thunderstorms and windy weather in the Chicago area and northwest Indiana.

Isolated storms are expected to develop in the late afternoon south of Interstate 80, then across the metropolitan area in the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms could produce heavy rainfall, cloud-to-ground lightning, wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail, NWS said.

The storms will likely become more intense as the evening progresses but will taper off closer to midnight, NWS said. Small hail and locally heavy rainfall could still fall overnight.

Temperatures will remain mild, with a high of 60 degrees and low of 53.

Thunderstorms are also possible for Monday across the area, “some of which could be strong,” forecasters said. But at least it will be warmer — the high is forecast at 74 degrees.
