A dense fog advisory is in effect for most of the Chicago area until early Monday, when temperatures are expected to rebound after a wet, chilly weekend.

Visibility will be reduced to less than a quarter of a mile with the thickest pockets near Lake Michigan in parts of Cook and Lake counties in Illinois and Porter and Lake counties in northwest Indiana, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory is slated to last until 3 a.m.

Forecasters urge drivers to use their headlights, slow down and leave plenty of space ahead of them.

Showers and thunderstorms–some of which could become severe–are expected to roll in late Sunday through Monday afternoon, producing hail, downpours and wind gusts of up to 60 mph, forecasters said. Stronger storms are thought to have a better chance of forming south of Interstate 80 and in the eastern part of the region.

The storms are riding a warm front bringing a sharp uptick in temperatures, with the mercury hopping from the mid-40s overnight to the 70s by 7 a.m., forecasters said.

Monday’s high of 74 will gave way to cooler temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s by mid-week, according to the weather service.
