73-year-old Indiana woman killed in south suburban crash

A 73-year-old woman from northwest Indiana was killed in a crash that injured two others Thursday afternoon in south suburban Crete.

About 4:05 p.m., a vehicle heading west on Burville Road was waiting to turn onto northbound Calumet Expressway (Route 394) from a median when it pulled into oncoming traffic “for unknown reasons,” Illinois State Police Master Sgt. R.A. Caves said. It was then struck by another vehicle driving southbound on the expressway.

A passenger in the vehicle that was struck, identified as 73-year-old Patricia Hornes, was airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m., according to Caves and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy performed Friday found Hornes died of her injuries and ruled the death an accident. She lived in the 1200 block of West 129th Avenue in Crown Point, Ind., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The driver of the vehicle that was struck was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Hospital in Dyer, Ind., then airlifted to Christ, Caves said. That person’s age, gender or condition was not known.

The other driver was treated and released from St. Margaret, Caves said.

No citations or charges were filed.
