A 46-year-old man died after he jumped into a north suburban lake after a cat during a canoe trip Sunday night.

The man was in a canoe with another male, a female and a cat on Loon Lake about 7:45 p.m. when the cat jumped into the water and the man jumped in after it, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.

He went under the water and his body wasn’t recovered until 12:01 a.m. Monday, according to the sheriff’s office. His name was not immediately released pending notification of his family.

The cat survived, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office is investigating along with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
