Firefighters rescued three people, including a 6-year-old boy, from a fire late Thursday in west suburban Oak Park.

The fire started just before midnight at a building in the 600 block of North Humphrey, according to a statement from the Village of Oak Park. It quickly spread to an adjacent building.

An adult man and the 6-year-old boy were found unresponsive on the second floor of the building, and were taken to hospitals, according to the village. The child’s mother was taken to a hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation.

More than 40 firefighters from the Oak Park, River Forest, North Riverside, Cicero, Forest Park, Elmwood Park, Stickney, Bellwood and Berwyn fire departments worked to extinguish the blaze, village officials said.

The two buildings were heavily damaged, and the American Red Cross is assisting residents who were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Oak Park police and fire departments, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office.
